SHAPING THE NEW WORLD ORDER: FROM VIENNA TO THE WASHINGTON CONSENSUS

PERRY ANDERSON IN CONVERSATION WITH MISHA GLENNY
SAMSTAG / SATURDAY, 27.09.2025 / 11h00

AKADEMIE DER BILDENDEN KÜNSTE WIEN, AULA

The British historian and political theorist PERRY ANDERSON considers parallels between the Concert of European Powers that took shape in Vienna in 1815 and the concert of global powers that emerged in 1991 with the end of the Cold War. What were the differences between the two, and why did the second dissolve so much more quickly than the first? In a wide-ranging conversation with IWM Rector MISHA GLENNY, Anderson will discuss the impact of successive conflicts in the Middle East, the consequences of the financial crisis of 2008, the breakdown of relations between Russia and West, the onset of tensions between the EU and the US, and the eclipse of Sino-American amity.

PERRY ANDERSON assumed the editorship of the New Left Review in 1962, and has written about a wide range of radical, liberal, and conservative thinkers—among them Eric Hobsbawm, Jürgen Habermas, Pierre Nora, and Carlo Ginzburg. His books combine history, philosophy, and political theory. He has lectured at universities around the world and contributes to the London Review of Books and the NLR.
