FEMICIDES, CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND MEXICO’S ELITE

LYDIA CACHO IN CONVERSATION WITH KIRSTY LANG
SONNTAG / SUNDAY, 28.09.2025 / 11h00

AKADEMIE DER BILDENDEN KÜNSTE WIEN, SITZUNGSSAAL

Mexican journalist LYDIA CACHO will discuss her outstanding and courageous investigative work. Her brilliantly researched exposés of violence perpetrated against women and children have made her a target of some of Mexico’s most powerful groups. In a conversation with BBC's KIRSTY LANG, she will illustrate her endeavors defending the victims of child-trafficking rings, and the epidemic of femicides in Ciudad de Juarez, home to some of the country’s most notorious drug cartels. As the drug trade shifts from cocaine to fentanyl, Cacho will consider whether Mexico’s first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, can be more effective than her predecessors in combating the criminal and state violence that continues to plague the country.

LYDIA CACHO is arguably Mexico’s most famous journalist and author. She came to attention in 2003 by uncovering a child pornography ring in Cancun, implicating leading businessmen and politicians. Since then, she has continued to expose the criminal activities of Mexico’s elite, for which she has been kidnapped, beaten, and worse. Despite her numerous international and national awards, Cacho now lives in exile in Spain. Her non-fiction books and young adult novels have been translated into many languages.
