CAN HUMANISM SURVIVE IN THE 21ST CENTURY?

ROB RIEMEN IN CONVERSATION WITH YOEL GAMZOU
SONNTAG / SUNDAY, 28.09.2025 / 15h30

AKADEMIE DER BILDENDEN KÜNSTE WIEN, SITZUNGSSAAL

In the deeply unsettled world of today—plagued by uncertainty, political extremes, social tensions, and the alluring threat of technology—can humanism provide escape or salvation? The Dutch philosopher and author ROB RIEMEN argues that European humanism is the best answer to political extremes, and is needed today more than ever. Inspired by the ideas of thinkers like Thomas Mann, George Orwell, and Simone Weil, he will argue in conversation with the composer and conductor YOEL GAMZOU that true greatness lies not in power, but in values such as truth, justice, and freedom.

ROB RIEMEN, born in 1962, studied theology and philosophy at Tilburg University. He is a writer and essayist as well as the founder and president of the Nexus Institute, one of the leading European institutions for intellectual discourse. His works have been translated into 24 languages, and with The Eternal Return of Fascism (2010) he issued an early warning about today’s political developments. Riemen is considered one of modern European humanism’s most important thinkers.
