Confronted with an ever more confusing world, French social philosopher EVA ILLOUZ goes back to some of the masterpieces of Western literature and finds a unique viewpoint from which to examine the collapse of moral categories in the contemporary era. In her lecture, she draws a compelling analogy between political figures like Donald Trump and fictional characters like King Lear, and uses classic texts to understand the bewildering nature of contemporary politics. Followed by a conversation with IWM Albert Hirschman Permanent Fellow IVAN KRASTEV.
EVA ILLOUZ is director of studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris (EHESS) and one of the leading sociologists of culture and emotions. Her research focuses on capitalism, consumerism, media, and their impact on emotional life. She is the author of 19 books translated into 25 languages and a recipient of numerous international awards, including the Aby Warburg Award. Illouz regularly contributes to major international newspapers such as Le Monde, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Haaretz, and El País.
